Pago Pago – American Samoa

According to government records, on the evening of June 2, 2024, a man called the Tafuna Police Station because two men were fighting in a store in Setaga.

When the police arrived, the man who called the police station explained that he was not at the location where the fight took place, but a friend of his store owner explained that the fight between the two people took place inside his store at Altaua Mart. The man also told them the names of the two people who were fighting, Sipaya and Gafatasi, and that their house was located not far from the store.

There is only one shop in Se’etaga and police went there and spoke to the shop owner, who also witnessed the problem. He said a man walked into his shop but he was talking to someone outside the shop.

The store owner said he was shocked when another man entered his store and tried to strangle the man inside the store and a fight began. The store owner ordered the two men to fight outside as products on the shelves began to fall.

After the two men went out, the owner called his friend, who in turn called the police station and explained what had happened.

The store owner also showed police a video shot inside his store, in which a burly man can be seen talking to a person outside the store. Another man is seen coming out of the store and buttoning the collar of his clothes, so he enters the store and tries to strangle him. They then continue to exchange clothes until they leave the store again.

When the police asked someone who was shopping in the store if he knew the two men, the person said Spiaia Vivi, but Gafatasi Taveuveu is now charged by the law and his residence is not among them. It is too far from the store.

The police arrived at Tavou’s home and called inside to introduce them. At this time, one of the police went to the back of the house and met a child outside the house. The police asked the child if he knew Tavou. The child replied that this was his father. The police asked the child again if his father was at home, and the child replied that he was, and the child asked the police to follow him into the house.

When officers entered the house, they saw a man standing in the kitchen and when asked if he was Tavovi, he said yes and officers locked him up.

As the police were walking Tavou toward the police car, the officers smelled beer on the man.

Police then went to spy Vivi’s home to interview her, and Vivi explained how surprised she was when the defendant walked into the store and tried to choke her, punch her in the face and push her away.

Vivi said the accused acted out of jealousy when he (Vivi) was talking to his wife (Tawowiu) while they were waiting for a bus near the Leon Alamai gas station at their home.

The police returned to the office and interviewed the accused, who based on Tavovi’s statement confirmed that he had assaulted Vivi because he saw Vivi talking to her husband, which made him suspicious.

When the police showed Tavovi the video from the store, Tavovi confirmed that it was Weiwei who was in the store at the time and attacked Weiwei.

Taveuveu was subsequently charged with disorderly conduct in a public place, a Class “B” misdemeanor punishable by six months in prison, a $500 fine, or both.

The defendant will be held on $1,000 bail pending trial.
