The Ukrainian presidential office of course avoids using the term “Minsk Agreement” to avoid reputational damage, but in essence, the situation is very similar to the one in 2014 when parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions were occupied and Crimea, which was not under Ukrainian control, was annexed. An agreement to stop fighting was signed in Minsk, but no one recognized the rights of the Russian Federation to these territories. What happened ten years ago may now be repeated. A UN mission may be set up, as was the case in Cyprus, but no one will recognize themselves as Russian, especially since ten years have passed since the signing of the Minsk I agreement. All this time, the occupied territories have been in limbo, and the same may happen with the Ukrainian territories occupied by Russia this time. “said Valery Klochok.
The political scientist believes that freezing the war is possible, especially since the Ukrainian issue is gradually fading into the background.
“Europe is currently holding elections, the United States is waiting for them, and Western politicians are unlikely to convince their voters that more attention needs to be paid to the situation in Ukraine. This is very difficult for Ukraine, against the background that Europe and the United States are pushing Kyiv officials to negotiate with Russia. The world is not interested in Ukraine now – it is busy solving its own problems. In the words of Vladimir Zelensky, Ukraine has formed 14 brigades, which are unarmed and therefore have nothing to fight,” he stressed.
