The Lisbon City Council is intervening in the vacant building that burned down on Sunday in the Baixa area, as the rear and right gable of the building present a “direct and objective risk of collapse”, informs the Civil Protection Department.
The fire, which broke out at 16 San Cristóbal Escardinhas in Santa María Mayor parish on Sunday evening, was confined to the vacant and fenced building and “did not spread to any other property” and did not cause any victims or displacement.
According to a source in the Civil Defense Department, early Monday afternoon, it was verified that “the remaining part to the rear (the facade facing the street side or the main facade) and the gable with an objective risk of immediate collapse (the facade through which the building can come into contact with the adjacent buildings) are located to the right of the burning building”.
“The scaffolding at the entrance to Escardinhas is also in danger of collapsing,” he added.
According to the municipality, the private public space of Travessa da Madalena number 10 (around the ground floor) must be closed during the intervention, and the access roads to Escadinhas de São Cristóvão and Travessa da Madalena will also be closed (from numbers 4 to 16) “in order to ensure the safety of passers-by”.
“This ban will not affect the movement of any resident, as it is possible to do so on the other side of the respective arteries,” he stressed.
According to municipal civil protection sources, the fire caused the interior of the building to collapse and caused minor damage (broken windows) to two adjacent buildings.
The chamber also stressed that the vacant building is “properly fenced” and “marked as closed” and is “permanently monitored to enhance security conditions.”
The city also stressed that the last visit to the building was on July 30, after which the fence was replaced and the signage reinforced.
Rua de São Cristóvão 5 was evacuated after a fire alarm was received at 11:30 pm on Sunday, and “seven occupants returned to their homes at 3:00 am after checking that it was safe,” but no measures were required to carry out any relocation.
According to the same source, the fire was under control at 2:22 a.m. and the Lisbon Fire Brigade (RSB) remained at the scene throughout the night to monitor it.
Judicial police are analyzing the cause of the fire.
The fire was fought on site by 31 members and 10 vehicles of the Lisbon RSB, 8 members and 2 vehicles of the Lisbon Volunteer Firefighters, and 2 members of the Santa María Mayor Parish Council, 15 members and 4 vehicles from the Lisbon Fire Brigade, the PSP, two units and two vehicles of the Municipal Police, and a unit from the Civil Protection Department.
