Martin Flowers, from Newport, had been working for Wulfrun Building Solutions in Wolverhampton for just three weeks when he suffered the work accident in January.

Martin had to quit his £40,000-a-year sick leave job because of his injury, but his employer said they would welcome him back in July this year when his doctor declares him fit and able to work.

Meanwhile, the 60-year-old has been living on £415 a month of statutory sick pay (SSP) since January and has applied for universal credit to help pay the bills.

He said: “My employers have been very good to me since my accident. Although I had only worked there for three weeks, they kept me on until I recovered. They even laid off staff earlier this year but still kept me on.
