Rivian has suspended production of commercial delivery vans used by retail giant Amazon due to a parts shortage, a spokesman for the electric car maker said Friday.
The production suspension is the latest in a series of supply chain challenges facing Rivian, which, like other electric vehicle manufacturers, has faced severe production problems due to supplier shortages over the past two years.
Amazon is Rivian’s largest investor with a 16% stake, and the company has ordered 100,000 electric delivery vans to be in service by 2030. Sales to Amazon accounted for about 19% of Rivian’s revenue last year.
“A parts shortage has temporarily impacted production of our electric delivery vans (EDVs). We expect to resume all suspended production,” the spokesperson said in an emailed statement.
The parts shortage will not affect production of other Rivian vehicles, including its R1S SUV and R1T pickup truck models.
Earlier this month, Rivian maintained its production forecast and said deliveries would be slightly lower in the current quarter due to the closure of the factory in April for restructuring and modification.
