Egypt remembers Hende Rostom: a symbol of Arab art and beauty

Today, Thursday, August 8, marks the anniversary of the death of the artist Rostom, who left our world on this day in 2011 due to a heart attack, but she remains one of the most prominent artistic symbols of Egypt and the Arab world. She has been radiant since her entry into the art world, until she became one of the most important icons in the history of cinema.

Nariman Hussein (also known as Hind Rostom) was born on November 12, 1931, to a Circassian father and an Egyptian mother. She began her artistic career in 1947, when she made her debut on the movie screen as an “extra” in the film “Ghazal El Banat”. This appearance started a journey full of success.

Her works and titles

At the beginning of her artistic career, Hende Rostom married the director Hussein Reda, who helped her a lot in her stardom and popularity. During her career, she created more than 90 artistic works, including the films “Ibn Hamido”, “Bab al-Hadid”, “Clash on the Nile”, “Rumors of Love”, “Sitt al-Banat”, “Blood on the Nile”, “Eternal Love”, “Woman on the Edge” and “Love in Love”.

Her performances won the admiration of audiences and critics alike, prompting them to give her nicknames such as “The Queen of Seduction”, “Marilyn Monroe of the East”, “Rita Hayworth of Egypt” and “Al Hanim”. She was also honored by the Cairo Film Festival in 1993 for her outstanding artistic work.

Challenging personal life

Rustom’s personal life was as exciting as her artistic life. She was married twice: first to director Hussain Reda, for whom she bore her only daughter, Basant, and second to Dr. Mohammad Fayez. She also refused to marry famous stars like Rushdi Abaza and Salah Zulfikar, preferring to wait for true love to call.
