PARIS: Egypt advanced to the quarter-finals of the Olympic men’s football tournament with a surprise 2-1 win over Spain, which had already qualified for the tournament, on Tuesday, with Ibrahim Adel scoring twice.

Adel put Egypt ahead in Bordeaux with a brilliant goal towards the end of the first half and added another in the 62nd minute, finding the net after Spain’s Joan Pacheco lost the ball.

Samuel Omorodian pulled one back for Spain in the dying seconds of the game, but Egypt prevailed, leapfrogging their already qualified opponents to take first place in Group C.

Egypt, captained by former Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny, will play the runner-up of Group D, which also includes Japan, Paraguay, Mali and Israel, in the quarter-finals in Marseille on Friday.

Three years ago, Egypt lost to Brazil in the quarterfinals, while Brazil defeated Spain in the final.

Spain’s quarter-final match will be held in Lyon, against the winner of Group D.

Hosts France and two-time gold medallists Argentina are among the other teams hoping to advance to the quarterfinals on Tuesday. — AFP
