Encountering Other Cinema (EDOC) presents a new edition: its 23rd. On this occasion, the famous documentary film festival held in Quito and Guayaquil returns to one of its historic venues, the Maac Cine in the city of Buenos Aires.
“The biggest news is the return of Edoc to Maac. It’s been about seven years since we arrived there. Maac was not in good shape, but now we are back and it’s great news for the people of Guayaquil. Although we have been to other important venues, the Museum of Anthropology and Contemporary Art means a lot to Edoc,” shared Lisandra Rivera, conference director.
“It’s a natural place for Edoc because we have films on all kinds of subjects, including anthropology and sociology. There are experimental films, documentaries that experiment with reality,” the spokesperson added. “We’ve been in Maac since the first Edoc.”
The international festival will be held simultaneously in the Ecuadorian capital and main port in 2024. In Quito, the festival will begin on September 13 in the rooms of the Ochoymedio cinema of the House of Ecuadorian Culture and Incine. In Guayaquil, the film will be screened at Maac Cine and Mz14 starting on September 17. The events in both cities will end on September 22.

“Edoc sees reality from a free point of view. That is, they are films where the filmmakers care about a topic or want to tell something and they are not sponsored by any organization, they are independent,” Rivera stressed.
In this sense, the festival is preparing to screen 85 films, 25 of which are screened in Guayaquil. The director explains that EDOC’s list includes both feature films and shorts, with a pleasant selection of national films. “This party is a window for the new independent image of Ecuador to arrive on the big screen.”
The film is divided into four parts: Possibilities of a World (international selection); How do they see us, how do we see ourselves? (national work); I have a camera in front of me (autobiographical proposal); and Invisible Communities. In addition, Guayaquil will host retrospectives of three directors: Cao Guimarães, Pocho Álvarez and Kamel Algaffari.
The first part is the work Mixtape La Pampa (Andrés Di Tella, Argentina/Chile, 2023); The Fire Within: A Requiem for Katia and Maurice Clough (Werner Herzog, Germany, 2022); A History of the Destruction of Nature (Sergei Loznitsa, Germany/Netherlands, 2023).
Among the national titles Toropolo: Vegetative (Manolo Sarmiento, 2024); Toroboro: Mass Consulting (Manolo Sarmiento, 2024); Ozogot (Joe Holberg Silva, 2023); Manu, visual album (Alexandra Cuesta, 2023); We want our water (Heriberto Guaringa, 2024); Rumors with distant origins (Pavel Quevedo Urauri, 2024); DETOUR (Emilio Lerena, 2023); Notes on the Death of Movie Theaters (Inaki Onate, 2023); state of exception (Lorena Salas et al., 2024); Like spores in the wind (Constanza Puente, 2023).
Producer Daniela Delgado Viteri also produced a series of four short films: We all want a place of our own. (2022); Antonio Valencia (2021); Shortcuts (2018); Epistolary Video (2024).
All the tapes have specific dates and times for viewing. This information will be confirmed on social networks (@festivaledoc) a few days before and after the festival. To see all the films you can buy a passport for $25 (unlimited viewings) or a Quito multi-ticket (to see five shows) for $15. In Guayaquil, a multi-ticket (tickets for four shows) costs $10.
