The Minister of Industrialization, Trade and Consumption of Madagascar, Edgard Razafindravahy, has been appointed Secretary General of the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC). His candidacy was accepted by the Council of Ministers of the regional cooperation organization, held online yesterday, at the proposal of the Malagasy State. The former President of the Special Delegation (PDS) of the Antananarivo City Commune will take office on July 16, 2024.
Edgard Razafindravahy succeeds Professor Vêlayoudom Marimoutou, former president of the Reunion Academy, as Secretary General of the IOC from 16 July 2020. Over the next four years, Madagascar will have to ensure the good management of the affairs of the Organization and continue the projects initiated by its predecessors as well as serving the interests of all Member States.
The atypical career of Edgard Lazafindrawahi has particularly impressed the foreign ministers of the Indian Ocean Commission member states and heads of delegations to the Council of Ministers. Like most senior Malagasy politicians, he is an economic operator turned politician who has achieved remarkable success in the field of industrialization, establishing small industrial units in the four corners of Madagascar.
It is very likely that Edgard Razafindravahy will no longer be part of the future government of Christian Ntsay. His new position should not coincide with the appointment of a ministerial post. But he must go further to ensure that this regional cooperation organization brings more benefits to his native Madagascar, which until now has been one of the poor parents of most existing regional cooperation organizations in the Indian Ocean region and in Africa, such as COMESA or SADC.
