August 22, 2024 (AL DAEIN) – Sudanese troops launched an airstrike on a major hospital in Sudan’s East Darfur state, forcing it to close, doctors said on Thursday, warning of a looming health disaster for thousands of people in the conflict zone.
On Tuesday, Al Daein Teaching Hospital was bombed, killing at least 15 people. Ali Mahmoud, the hospital’s director, said the airstrike had rendered the hospital completely unusable.
“Al Daein Teaching Hospital has been completely out of service,” Mahmoud said. About 650 patients, including 200 children, were evacuated.
The closure also affected surrounding private clinics, sparking fears of a serious health crisis in the area, which has been under the control of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since late last year.
The explosion destroyed several wards including the men’s internal medicine ward, the intensive care unit, the mental health department and the tuberculosis department. The casualties included three newborns and a stroke patient.
Since the conflict broke out in April, most hospitals in Darfur have been unable to operate normally due to fighting, which has exacerbated the spread of diseases such as malaria, diarrhea and malnutrition.
