African Popular Front president Francis Awino has filed a petition with the East African Court of Justice (EACJ) holding the government accountable for deaths and injuries caused during the Generation Z protests.
In a complaint filed in the Arusha court, Awino accused the government of violating citizens’ constitutional right to protest, leading to a large number of injuries, deaths, kidnappings and forced evictions. He cited reports by human rights organizations estimating 60 deaths and 66 mysterious disappearances linked to the protests.
Awino urged the court to hold President William Ruto, Deputy President Rigati Gachagua, the Attorney General, Interior Minister Kiture Kindiki and former Inspector General Jafit Kum criminally accountable for the incidents.
He also asked the court to authorize a thorough investigation into human rights violations and issue an order preventing further violence against protesters by law enforcement officials.
The petition includes allegations of the Gitulai shooting incident, in which military personnel reportedly opened fire on protesters, killing and injuring people. In addition, Awino claims that the government has suppressed media coverage by interrupting internet services during the protests and forcibly evicting thousands of residents living in Mathare, Mukuru and Kibera.
Avino criticized enforcement actions that selectively demolish buildings, noting that slum areas have suffered harsh demolition campaigns while similar structures in wealthier neighborhoods have remained unscathed.
“While slum demolition efforts are being vigorously pursued, similar structures in affluent areas remain largely untouched, highlighting the discriminatory application of the law,” the notice read in part.
He stressed that forced demolitions and police violence had resulted in injuries and deaths among residents, including a 17-year-old boy who was killed while resisting a forced eviction in Mathare.
