The Earthquake Prediction Centre has warned that Gibraltar and southern Spain face a “moderate” earthquake risk in the coming days.

In addition to the British overseas territories, countries such as Italy, Poland, Romania and Bulgaria have also issued moderate alerts.

Countries at “increased” risk are Albania, northern Greece and Syria.

However, Quantectum said that between July 29 and August 4, Armena, southern Greece, Turkey and Iran faced a “high” risk.

The alert was triggered by the “passage of an active tectonic wave”, with forecast models showing Turkey and the eastern Mediterranean regions at greatest risk.

Various forecast models show a “highest shear traction field” extending along the Mediterranean Sea, starting at Gibraltar, passing through southern Spain and France, and then extending eastward.

The regions with the highest local fault instability are Albania, Greece, northern Iran and Turkey, while the regions with lower local fault instability are Gibraltar, Romania, Italy, Poland and the Caucasus.
