French basketball tournament is most watched event in history Olympic Gamesthe World Basketball Federation (FIBA) announced today.

According to FIBA, 1,078,319 fans watched the men’s and women’s basketball games live in Lille and Paris, breaking the record held by Atlanta in 1996. A total of 1,068,032 fans watched the live basketball broadcast of the Atlanta Olympics.

FIBA noted that the record is even more significant if one knows that the number of games in these two Olympics has been reduced by 40, compared to 92 in Atlanta, because the format of the competition is very different, as previously the Olympic champion had to play at least eight games, now it is six.

The average attendance for the two matches in Lille and Paris was 20,737, including 21,711 men and 19,763 women.

The Olympic champions in both events became the United States, continuing their dominance in the Olympics. The Americans celebrated for the 17th time and the US women’s national team celebrated for the 10th time.
