Addis Ababa, July 21, 2024 (Address) Ethiopian Airlines (EA) has issued an official statement in response to a video circulating on social media platforms showing a passenger being kicked out of flight ET308 to Nairobi on July 19, 2024.
The airline said in a statement that it “will take the necessary time to thoroughly investigate this matter and make the factual information public.”
According to a statement from the airline, three passengers booked in economy class were overbooked. The boarding agent explained the situation and “advised them that the flight was full and they would be taken on the next available flight,” the statement read.
It is alleged that the three passengers ignored the dissuasion of the boarding staff and tried to bypass the security personnel at the boarding gate to board the plane. One of the passengers agreed to the request, but the two passengers refused and were escorted off the plane by security personnel.
Therefore, the information circulating on social media that the passengers in economy class will not affect the VIP passengers in business class is not true and this statement on social media platforms is wrong. “It is worth mentioning that these passengers were booked in economy class and their seats will not be affected by the presence of non-Ethiopian VIP passengers in business class,” EA added.
The airline further explained the protocols and procedures it follows when boarding its aircraft, “…following standard protocols, VIP, Business Class passengers and Platinum ShebaMiles members are allowed to board after all other passengers are seated.”
As a result, standby passengers misunderstood the situation, leading them to “mistakenly believe that their seats were allocated to VIP passengers. This was not the case and the video that was circulated does not reflect the true sequence of events,” the statement read.
EA said passengers who were overbooked would be offered the next available flight.
