A Dutch tourist currently living in Paramaribo, Suriname, expressed to GFC News Lifestyle her surprise and admiration for the extraordinary situation she experienced on Saturday at a supermarket on Gompertstraat in the north of the city.
In a store run by a Chinese entrepreneur, she found something unusual: a reclining chair in the middle of the supermarket, on which the owner himself was sleeping comfortably.
“I was buying groceries at the supermarket and was pleasantly surprised. I couldn’t help but laugh when I heard him snoring while a customer was shopping.
Right in the middle of the store. I will definitely tell my family about this when I come back. I have never experienced this in the Netherlands,” she said.
She believes that this incident shows a significant difference between Suriname and the Netherlands.
“It shows the freedom and unfettered feeling of the Surinamese people, which is something I don’t often see in my own country,” she added.
Visitors describe the experience as a reflection of the relaxed and informal lifestyle that prevails in Suriname, where people can be themselves without worrying about social conventions or strict rules.
