Opinion- The recent heavy rains that hit Suriname were unprecedented. With so much rainfall in such a short period of time, it is no wonder that many streets and roads were flooded.
The Surinamese government should be held accountable for the fact that the pumping stations were not functioning properly and the drains were clogged.
But it is too easy to keep pointing the finger at the Surinamese authorities as if Suriname is the only country struggling with this problem.
What many Surinamese people don’t know is that despite the excellent infrastructure in the Netherlands, streets and roads can also flood during periods of heavy rainfall.
Recent examples show that even in cities such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague, streets can become flooded after heavy rains.
In August 2023, a heavy rainfall caused parts of the A10 motorway around Amsterdam to be impassable.
In October 2022, a similar situation occurred in Rotterdam, where parts of the city center were flooded after several hours of heavy rain.
These examples show that even the best planned and maintained infrastructure is no match for the whims of nature.
The problem is not just in Suriname, it is also in Suriname. It is a global phenomenon that requires innovative and sustainable solutions.
Climate change is causing more extreme weather events, and both developed and developing countries must adapt to this new reality.
We should not just criticize Suriname but recognize that flooding is a universal problem.
Now is the time to invest in better drainage systems and work together to develop solutions to protect us all from the increasing impacts of extreme precipitation.
