Bhungroo: Managing drought in India
Winner of the Driving Force for Change Award
Drought is a serious problem in the western Indian state of Gujarat, especially for poor women farmers. Limited and unpredictable rainfall, coupled with climate change, leads to waterlogging during the crop season. During the rest of the year, farmers face severe water shortages. But thanks to a life-changing technology, poor farmers are now turning a crisis into an opportunity.
Bugru is a water management system that helps farmers adapt to increasingly limited and unpredictable rainfall. Bhungaroo injects and stores excess rainwater underground and pumps it out for use during dry periods. Adopting this technology reduces salt deposition in the soil, increases fresh water supply and saves farmers from drought.
Bhungaroo is the 2014 winner of the Power of Change Lighthouse campaign.
