On a somber Tuesday afternoon, thousands of people gathered at the Kamuzu International Airport in the capital, Lilongwe, to welcome the body of veteran broadcaster and actor Hope Chisanu, who died on June 1, 2024 in the United States.
The air was thick with sadness and grief as mourners and other prominent figures, including former Reserve Bank Governor Dr. Dariso Kabembe, welcomed the body of the late Hope Chisanu back to her hometown for rest.
Dr. Kabambe, in an interview with the media, was full of praise for Chisanu, highlighting his dedication and passion for his profession. He described Chisanu as a true patriot who used his talent not only to entertain but also to educate and inspire his fellow countrymen.
“Chisanu’s work in the media industry has left a lasting impact on the people of Malawians and his presence will be greatly missed,” Kabembe said.
Dr Kabambe expressed deep sorrow at the loss of such a talented and respected personality, saying Chisanu would be remembered for his contribution to national development as a broadcaster and movie actor.
Prior to moving to the United States, Chisanu worked for the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation, rising to the position of Program Director in charge of outside broadcasting. In addition to his work at the broadcaster, Chisanu also had a successful film career, starring in several local productions, including Shemu Joya’s award-winning “The Last Fishing Boat,” which showcased his acting talent and versatility.
The late Chisanu is expected to be buried on Thursday, July 4, 2024, at Ngodya Farm in Kampata, Lilongwe.
