The Democratic Republic of Congo Leopards defeated Kenya’s Moran 82-61 on Saturday in Bamako in the final of the inaugural FIBA AfroCan, a competition for basketball players playing on the African continent.
Maxi Munanga Shamba was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.
The Democratic Republic of Congo Leopards football team was also the champion of the inaugural African Nations Championship (CHAN) in 2009.
President Felix Tshisekedi congratulated the Leopards on behalf of all Congolese people.
“I returned from Abuja with joy to learn that the Leopards basketball team has won the inaugural 2019 African Canadian Basketball Championship. On behalf of all the Congolese people who are honoured by this historic victory, I congratulate you,” said Mr. Tshisekedi.
The Leopards advanced to the finals after defeating Palancas Negras of Angola 84-78 in the semifinals at the Salamatumaga Stadium in Bamako on Thursday.
The Leopards made it all the way to the final. Their victory in the final was their fourth straight win, having beaten Kenya 82-65 in the group stage, Nigeria 81-55, Chad 67-60 in the quarterfinals and Angola 84-78 in the semifinals.
A total of 12 countries participated in the competition, namely Mali, Algeria, Angola, Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt, Guinea, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Chad and Tunisia.
