Leaders of DPP branches at public universities have written to the party, asking for changes to party laws to give them voting rights ahead of this month’s party congress.

Some leaders including Micah Nthere of the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) signed a letter dated August 9, 2024 asking students to participate in the party’s democratic process, saying they are not spectators or clappers in the party.
“We are also active participants in the growth and development of the party. Our participation in the decision-making process is essential to ensure that the party leadership reflects our aspirations and interests,” the letter reads.
DPP spokesperson Shadrick Namalomba said the students’ request made sense and the party would consider it, but it needed to be clearly stated in the party constitution.
The DPP is scheduled to hold its conference in Blantyre from the 17th to the 18th of this month.
