Senior member of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and candidate for National Director of Logistics, Kenneth Lawson Bwanali, has decried the authoritarian tendencies prevailing in the party, saying such tendencies erode the fundamental pillars of democracy.

The reprimand followed the directives of DPP governors Alfred Gangata, Jap Mhango, Chimwemwe Chipungu, Mary Navicha, Chipiliro Mpinganjira, Dr. Mwale and Dr. Jean Mathanga who asked the party’s regional governors to field a predetermined list of candidates to contest in the forthcoming DPP convention.
Bwanali believes that the directive seriously violates democratic principles and ethics.
He expressed this view in a letter to Mfebo, asking him to discipline the governors.
“The directive they issued at a meeting two days ago, asking the DPP regional governors to contest on a pre-determined list of candidates at the forthcoming DPP convention, is a gross violation of democratic principles and ethics. Such authoritarian tactics not only erode the foundations of democracy but also mark a lamentable descent into authoritarianism,” Bwanali said.
He reminded Mfepo that the duty of regional chiefs within the assembly should be to create a fair and open environment where all candidates can campaign fairly in their respective regions.
He further stressed that the autonomy of delegates to choose candidates based on their capabilities and commitment to the party should be guaranteed without bias.
“I express my unequivocal opposition and concern at this development. Resolute steps must be taken immediately to rectify this illegality. I implore the President, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, to swiftly discipline these individuals who also hold positions on the organising committee of the convention. Furthermore, I implore the President to ensure that they are suspended from their party positions until the end of the convention,” he said.
“It is of utmost importance to uphold democratic principles and preserve the integrity of the DPP convention. We are confident that the President will address this issue swiftly and decisively to create an atmosphere that upholds democratic values and fairness within the party,” Bwanali concluded.
Mphepo has yet to comment.
