“Brexit+++” was the slogan Donald Trump, who also called himself “Mr. Brexit,” promoted to voters during his successful presidential campaign. Sure enough, many Americans would soon wake up to feelings similar to those experienced by Brexiteers on the morning of June 24: confusion that so many polls had failed to predict the outcome, shock that voters ignored expert advice, and concern about liberal values. If Trump likes these comparisons, it’s because he identifies with the architects of Brexit: privileged demagogues who, like him, are adept at manipulating the public’s deepest fears and instincts.
