President Joe Biden warned that Republican nominee Donald Trump “poses a real threat to American security” in his first television interview since dropping out of the presidential race.
“Mark my words, if he wins … this election, look what happens,” Biden told CBS News in a pre-recorded interview that aired Sunday.
“He poses a real threat to American security. Look, we are at a turning point in world history … and democracy is key.”
Biden, 81, has kept a low profile since dropping out of the race after his poor performance in a debate with Trump sparked concerns about his age and mental abilities.
In a brief television interview recorded at the White House last week, he appeared a little weak but clear-minded. He again admitted that he lost the debate but stressed that there was “no serious problem” with his health.
Explaining his withdrawal, he said other Democratic politicians running for reelection were concerned he would hurt their chances of reelection, adding that his only mission was to prevent Trump from returning to power.
“Many of my Democratic colleagues in the House and Senate believe I will hurt them in the election,” he said.
“For me, a key issue remains – and this is no joke – preserving this democracy.
“I have an obligation to the country to do the most important thing we can do, and that is – we must, must, must defeat Trump.”
– Help Harris –
Biden said he was proud of his record on jobs, investment and the coronavirus recovery, and vowed to work hard to campaign for Kamala Harris, his successor as vice president.
“I’m going to do everything I can to help Kamala,” he said.
Biden’s age has become a major factor in the 2024 campaign, and the Democratic Party’s hopes of winning have soared since Biden dropped out as Harris’s support has surged, putting Trump in a difficult position.
The outgoing president said he had expected to serve only one term when he won in 2020, but was persuaded to stay on.
“I thought I was a transition president. I couldn’t even tell how old I was. It was hard for me to get that out of my mouth, but things moved so fast that it didn’t happen,” he told CBS’ Robert Costa.
While Trump’s light-hearted campaign schedule has come under scrutiny, his running mate, J.D. Vance, has been making a splash on the Sunday morning political talk shows.
Vance answered questions on CNN, ABC and CBS about white supremacist attacks on his family, child care, asylum seekers and abortion.
In a heated exchange with CBS’ Margaret Brennan, Vance complained that she asked “six questions about abortion.”
“I’m still trying to get a definitive answer,” Brennan countered.
He also claimed that Harris was the “order caller” in the Biden administration.
He told CNN’s Dana Bash: “Dana, if she’s not calling the shots, then who is?”
