Former US President Donald Trump called the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan “catastrophic and the greatest disgrace” in American history.

In part of his speech at the Republican National Convention on Thursday, he again criticized the process:

“The withdrawal process was the beginning of a disaster and the worst disgrace in our nation’s history. We have never seen anything like it. Thirteen brave American soldiers were needlessly killed and 45 more were wounded. And no one is talking about it.”

The attack near the Monastery Gate of Kabul Airport on August 26, 2021 killed 13 US soldiers and at least 170 Afghans. This was the first attack by the Khorasan Province branch of the Islamic State in Afghanistan since the Taliban entered Kabul.

President Joe Biden’s administration has previously defended the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan.

On February 29, 2020, under the leadership of President Donald Trump, the United States and the Taliban signed an agreement in Doha, Qatar to withdraw troops from Afghanistan.

Trump said no U.S. troops were killed in Afghanistan during the last 18 months of his presidency.

He added that he had told Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, who was leading the Taliban delegation negotiating with the United States, that if the Taliban attacked U.S. troops, they would crush the Taliban in a way they had never experienced before.

Donald Trump also claimed that $85 billion worth of American weapons and military equipment left in Afghanistan were being sold on the market.

He also said he wanted to keep Bagram Air Base, where U.S. troops are stationed.

Trump further claimed that the base is now being used by China.

The former US president said the hasty and chaotic withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan emboldened Russian President Vladimir Putin to invade Ukraine.

Donald Trump promised to end all crises in the world, including the one in Ukraine.

Some American political analysts believe that Trump’s speech made it seem that the United States should not intervene too much in the Ukrainian war.

Hans Neuville is one of these analysts. He said:

“I think the most important thing is that the war in Ukraine is being portrayed differently.

This war is not being described as a Russian occupation of Ukraine, but as a war between two countries that we should not be involved in. That’s how he (Trump) and many Republicans portray the war, not all of it, but a lot of it. It’s clear that Trump has this view of the war.”

Trump said in a 92-minute speech, the longest speech at a U.S. political convention, that he would release all American hostages, but he did not say which hostages would be freed or how.

The U.S. State Department recently told The Washington Examiner that three American citizens are currently being held by the Afghan Taliban.

Donald Trump has also vowed to stop illegal immigration into the United States.

During his presidency, Trump began building barriers along the Mexican border to prevent illegal immigration into the United States.
