PARIS: Dominican Republic’s Marieledy Paulino began her charge towards the Olympic women’s 400m title, posting the fastest time in Monday morning’s heats in near-perfect conditions at the Stade de France.
The reigning world champion and silver medalist in the event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics crossed the finish line in 49.42 seconds, winning the heat by more than a second.
Britain’s Amber Anning was second among the 16 runners who advanced to the semifinals on Wednesday in 49.68 seconds, while 2019 world champion Salwa Eid Naser of Bahrain was third in 49.91 seconds.
Paulino, a lieutenant in the Dominican Air Force and a multiple medalist at the Military Games in the Dominican Republic, also led her country to gold in the 4x400m medley relay at the 2022 World Championships, surpassing her idol, Alison Felix, on her way to the title.
She won the silver medal in the 400m at the Tokyo Olympics, the first medal in women’s track and field history from the Dominican Republic, and was also the silver medalist in the mixed relay at the same Olympics.
The women’s 400m final will be held on Friday.
