29 August 2024 (Geneva) – Doctors Without Borders (MSF) met with representatives of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Geneva last week to advocate for improved humanitarian access in Sudan, the medical charity said on Thursday.
Despite its pledge of aid, MSF said its teams on the ground have been unable to retrieve two trucks carrying essential supplies seized by MSF forces in Kabkabiya.
“We continue to struggle to provide life-saving medical and nutritional care to patients in Zam Zam camp due to a lack of therapeutic food and other essential items,” MSF said in a statement.
The charity warned that therapeutic food used to treat malnourished children in Zamzam is running critically short and it may soon be forced to suspend services if it does not receive supplies in time.
MSF said its international president delivered a similar message to the Sudanese government during his first official visit to Port Sudan in July. The organization stressed its commitment to communicating with all warring parties to ensure the safety of its teams and facilities and to reach affected communities.
“In Sudan, we are one of the few international organizations carrying out humanitarian operations in areas controlled by both warring parties,” said Doctors Without Borders.
The blockade of medical trucks highlights the ongoing challenges facing humanitarian organizations in Sudan, where conflict and insecurity continue to hamper efforts to get aid to people in need.
