Wasantha Pushpakumara, chief public health inspector of Dehiwela, said some food items unfit for human consumption were found in the doctors’ canteen of the Kalubowela Teaching Hospital.
Following the instructions of the Municipal Commissioner, the PHI office of Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia Municipal Commission conducted a raid at the location.
The PHI office said that due to the current economic situation, many food outlets are serving unhygienic food and many complaints have been received from the public regarding the quality and standards of food and beverages sold.
An official said that during an inspection of the doctors’ canteen at the Kalubowila Teaching Hospital and several restaurants in the vicinity, several restaurants were found selling food that was unfit for human consumption.
The Philippine Department of Health said the Kalubovila Hospital has two cafeterias, and in the cafeteria dedicated to doctors, officers found spoiled paratha mix and sauces used in food preparation stored in refrigerators and containers.
“A lot of food items that were exposed to flies and insects were also cleared out of the canteen and after briefing the canteen owner and staff on how to properly prepare and store food, all the spoiled food items were destroyed in front of the canteen owner,” an official said.
In addition, PHI officials said that in a supermarket near the hospital, various meats, vegetables and dairy products were found stored together in a refrigerator in an unhygienic manner. After informing the management of the supermarket concerned, the food and beverages were destroyed. The owner of the hospital cafeteria and the supermarket owner will appear in court for trial.
