With some vendors, upgrading to a newer version to take advantage of new features or improved performance may require a complete rebuild of the user interface. In fact, there is ample evidence that major LIMS vendors force customers to start from scratch and reconfigure every screen in the workflow just to recreate what they had previously.
This can happen when there is a major technology upgrade between versions, such as moving from a desktop user interface to a web browser interface, or from an old web browser application to a new version. Other “cloud-only” solutions will force all customers to upgrade their LIMS at a specific time, whether they want to or not, leaving users with no control over their software and no time to verify that critical functionality is still functioning properly before going live.
