DISY MEPs Loukas Fourlas and Michalis Hatzipantela are in Portugal to attend a European People’s Party (EPP) conference to develop a strategy for the next five years.
From July 2 to 5, the European People’s Party, the largest parliamentary group in the European Parliament, will hold “learning days” in Cascais to develop strategies for legislative work in the 2024-2029 term.
“The goal is clear: to create a strong Europe that benefits its citizens by ensuring the fundamental values of democracy, rights, security, as well as economic development and competitiveness,” said two MEPs, Loukas Fourlas and Michalis Hatzipantela.
5-Point Plan
The agenda includes 5 points to build a strong Europe that protects and shapes the future. The working groups will deal with issues such as foreign policy, budget and structural policy, economy and environment, and law and home affairs.
Strengthening EU defence capabilities through common European defence procurement and the creation of a joint EU Security and Defence Commissioner and Council
Strengthening the protection of citizens from organized crime and terrorism was the first point on which participants were invited to comment.
The second point concerns the effective implementation of the Asylum and Migration Pact, led by the EPP and achieving the fundamental common European solution.
Strengthening the economy, competitiveness and trade relations based on technology and innovation is the third point the EPP presents to the Working Group, making it imperative to create new quality jobs and access to economically accessible products for all European citizens.
The fourth point is to protect the European way of life, which combines tradition and progress, to preserve cultural heritage, to respect the diversity of the environment and new generations, and to protect the health of citizens. This includes, among other things, the creation of a European Health Union, a European programme against cancer and other serious diseases, and the creation of conditions for a common market for medicines.
The fifth point of concern for the Portuguese Working Group concerns democracy, in particular the implementation of mechanisms that protect the fundamental values of democracy, the rule of law and fundamental rights, so that European democracy can effectively respond to future challenges.
