Mathieu Visenjoue won three medals at the World Championships in the Czech Republic in July.

Mathieu Visenjoue is only 20 years old. However, his youth has not stopped him from becoming a world champion on paper. The world championships in this discipline took place in the Czech Republic on the weekend of July 20-21. Despite this title, the young member of the Northern Warriors Rescue Boxing and Martial Arts team in Albion wants us to get to know martial arts better here.

Mathieu Visenjoue discovered the basic techniques of the combat cane at the age of 7 or 8, with the help of his father, Kersley. This sport, which at first glance looks a lot like fencing, is a combat sport using a conical blunt wooden cane, characterized by movements made with the side of the weapon instead of the tip. After 13 years of training, the Mauritian was selected for the 2022 World Cane Combat Championships to be held in Milan in September. Unfortunately, the young man did not make it there. “I wasn’t able to go because the dates of these worlds coincided with my HSC exams at the time.”

Fortunately, the World Championships in Prague in July 2024 gave Mathieu Vaisonjouet the opportunity to show all his talents. He was first a gold medalist in wheelchairs. He then won two bronze medals: the first in the mixed team event at the World Championships with Finn Anna Mekinen and his coach Thomas Dadour (who also won a silver medal in the men’s senior competition), and the second in the men’s Club World Cup.

Mathieu Visenjoue is happy with his achievements in Prague. However, he regrets that the combat cane is not promoted enough in Mauritius. “I initiated this discipline in Rodrigues. The purpose of my trip is to promote the sport on this island. The title won by Mathieu Visenjoue in the Czech Republic is a very important one. As fighting cane is one of the disciplines of the Federation Française de Savate in Mauritius, the Mauritian is the third athlete to win the title after Geraldo Thomasso (2005 champion of the Federation Française de Savate) and Mario Bienvenue (2002 champion of the Federation Française de Savate). However, he is the first Mauritian to win the world championship in fighting cane.

Mathieu Visenjoue and his trainer Thomas Dardour demonstrate the combat cane during the French boxing gala at the Place du Moulin in Bel-Ombre on July 27. Without masks, they showed techniques related to the discipline. Then, wearing masks, they simulated a fight.

Bel Ombre French Boxing Gala

On July 27, the French boxing extravaganza took place at the Saint-Martin/Bel Ombre boxing school. There were 15 fights, 13 of which were assaults, 1 professional violence and another combat. For eight fencers, it was also a knockout match for the French Savate Boxing World Championships to be held in Slovenia next October.

According to national team coach Kersley Visenjoue, the level of competition is interesting. “In general, in all the regions where French boxing is practiced, and in Rodriguez (since 1984), technically it has been going well for many years.” A few days after the Bel-Ombre gala, Kersley Visenjoue raised the question of qualification for the Savate Boxing World Championships in France, which will be held in October. “The World Championships are divided into 16 categories, so 16 athletes qualify for these World Championships. Unfortunately, due to lack of budget we can’t send them all to Slovenia. For my part, I will try my best. I plan to take seven or eight athletes”“, said Kersley Wiesenjouet. The final list should be announced soon. ‘Maybe next week’“The national team coach said.
