Martin Phillips’ friend and film director Julia Parnell said Martin Phillips would have been surprised at how much he was loved and admired.
Directed by Parnell Chill: The Triumph and Tragedy of Martin Phillips The documentary is about the lead singer of The Chills, who died this week at the age of 61.
“I think he would have looked forward with a smile to people talking about the music and his contribution in this way.
“But I think he would be surprised by the love and the care and the heartbreak. I think sometimes it does seem difficult for him to realise how loved and appreciated he is,” Parnell told Radio New Zealand Music 101.
“That’s probably one of the sad things, I often encourage him to feel more about how loved he is.”
Parnell developed a close friendship with Phillips, and she said she was struck by his unique personality when she first met him.
“I felt connected to him immediately, he’s such an extraordinary, fascinating and complex person.
“I immediately realized, how could I not want to work with him?”
The film unabashedly chronicles the ups and downs of Phillips’ life, beginning with him learning the bad news about his health and battle with Hepatitis C.
“Early on in the filming, in the first few days when we started shooting the documentary, we were told that if he didn’t change his lifestyle, he only had a few months to live.
“And that dire prophecy really sets the tone for the documentary. So it becomes a very urgent and deeply personal exploration of his life.”
Despite the bleak outlook, Phillips kept making music and bringing it to audiences around the world, she said.
“He knew he wasn’t in good health, he always knew it, and he always felt the need to do as much as possible.”
She said the film allowed him to move on and live the rest of his life.
“I think he moved to a place where he had more clarity and more ability to really be creative. He really stood taller after that and made the most of every minute he had left.”
She said that was followed by tours of Australia, the United States and Europe, as well as the release of three new Chills albums.
“I’m so impressed with what he’s accomplished over the past few years and now I’ll be carrying on his music forever, such is his indomitable spirit.
“And this music will live on forever.”
