On Saturday, a 74-year-old man died of an “Ebola-like virus” in a hospital near Madrid, Spain. The man was diagnosed with “Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever,” but the disease has a 40% mortality rate. There is no vaccine for the disease.
The virus is transmitted through tick bites to humans and the World Health Organization (WHO) has included the disease on its “priority disease list”.
The man was taken to the Rey Juan Carlos University Hospital in Móstoles on July 19 after being bitten by a tick in Toledo.
After confirming that the man was infected with the virus, he was isolated to reduce the chance of infection.
Initially, his condition was said to be stable but it deteriorated rapidly and he died on Saturday.
This is the first death from the virus in Spain since May 2020, when a 69-year-old man died from the virus in a hospital in Salamanca.
The World Health Organization considers the Ebola-like disease one of nine diseases with the greatest potential to cause a pandemic.
