On July 25 this year, the judge’s ruling recognized the violation of the right to education denounced by the Sinogee community (equivalent to the A’i Cofán indigenous people). The hearing required an interpreter in the A’ingae language (called Cofán).

The proceedings in court show that parents are distressed about the formation of their own communities, a good sign for society to demand its rights and a warning to education authorities to pay attention to the situation of children and adolescents in rural areas, those who are furthest away from Ecuador’s most populated areas.

The community of Sinhas dos Sinhas, located in the Amazonian department of Sucumbíos, has proposed a conservation action, arguing that they do not have adequate school infrastructure since 2018, when the Río Cofanes school was closed due to increased erosion of the Aguarico River, although classes they continue in public spaces.

The Amazon Front group explained that after six years of campaigning for the construction of a new school, no concrete response had been received.

Towards Educational Excellence

Last Thursday’s judicial resolution ordered the country’s education authorities to present a timetable for building new learning spaces within 60 days and to issue a public apology, among other compensation measures.

All of this could have been avoided if the three successive administrations had listened to the community’s voices during the period following the destruction of the campus. However, if there is a positive lesson to be drawn from this unfortunate reality, it is the existing focus on education and the desperate search for solutions by resorting to legally mandated actions.

On the other hand, the authorities have a responsibility to check and verify the educational conditions of children from all walks of life in Ecuador and take action as soon as possible to ensure that the right to education is not violated. (profound)
