SEOUL: Denmark’s food agency has recalled South Korean instant noodles made by a brand popular in the West, warning noodle lovers they are too spicy and could cause “acute poisoning”.
The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration said in a statement on Tuesday (June 11) that three noodle products of Samyang Foods were assessed to contain dangerous levels of capsaicin, the active ingredient in chili peppers.
Three products from the Samyang instant noodles range – Buldak 3x Spicy Chicken, 2x Spicy Chicken and Spicy Chicken Soup – have been withdrawn from sale in Denmark.
The Danish agency said the lead levels in one packet of noodles were “very high and pose a risk of acute poisoning to consumers”.
The statement added: “If you have these products you should discard them or return them to the store where they were purchased.”
The department specifically warned children not to eat the noodles and urged parents to call the poison hotline immediately if their children showed “acute symptoms”.
Sanyang products are very popular overseas, and the company’s operating profit hit a record high of more than US$110 million in 2023.
Samyang Foods said this was the first time its products had been recalled due to excessive spiciness, and said it would work to better understand local regulations in export markets.
