Other Democratic senators expressed similar concerns on Wednesday. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, R-Calif., told reporters: “I am very concerned about Joe Biden winning this November because it is an existential threat to the country if Donald Trump wins.” But he added: “Joe Biden has my support as the Democratic nominee.”

Sen. Tim Kaine, who is up for re-election in Virginia this year, told reporters he has “full confidence that Joe Biden will do the patriotic thing for our country.” That echoed Kaine’s comments earlier this week, when he said Monday that he believed Biden would make a patriotic decision “and I will support that decision.”

Another Democratic senator, Peter Welch, told reporters that “the president and his team have to really evaluate the available evidence with a cool, analytical eye” to determine “what is the best way to achieve the goal of saving our democracy from Trump’s disastrous presidency.”The cautious approach among Senate Democrats may indicate that they realize that public criticism may only further entrench Biden’s position.
