Defina/Galallo: The controversial appointment of the village chief is about to turn into a confrontation

The recent inauguration of the mayor of the commune of Defina, in the Garallo (Bougouni) circle, has sparked a fierce controversy among the villagers. The latter denounced the legitimacy of the process, especially since the mayor and the deputy governor of Garallo considered the participation too personal in order to impose their choice on a certain Amadou Koné. This controversial inauguration, perceived as an attack on local habits and customs, has triggered a wave of discontent that, without the intervention of the authorities, is about to turn into a confrontation between the protagonists.

In fact, after the death of its leader, Soumaila Koné, Defina, like all Malian communities, begins the election of a new leader, with two candidates in the running. They are Adama Koné and Amadou Koné, and after the failure of the consensus designation, the villagers are asked to decide by voting. While the village chiefs set up a committee to bring together the opinions of all parties to reach a consensus, the mayor, Salif Mamadou Koné, supported by the deputy governor – whose duty is to oversee the process and submit the minutes to the prefecture for registration – will ask the villagers to go directly to the vote. The vast majority of villagers, especially the wise ones, are indignant at the unilateral and biased decision of the mayor and prefer to leave the room. In the end, Amadou Koné will be elected as the village chief of Defina. Besides being fresh on the throne, his rule has been undermined by a revolt by protesters who plan to meet with the governor of the Buguni region to denounce the excessive involvement of Mayor Defina and Vice Governor Garallo.
