The overall situation in Cambodia, including Phnom Penh, was that on the morning of August 18, 2024, there were no rallies or movements instigated by the extreme opposition against the Royal Government of Cambodia. On the other hand, people’s daily lives were still going on and working normally, while the streets and public places were quiet and there were no obvious phenomena. Regarding such a situation, the spokesman of the Ministry of Defense considered it a shameful defeat of the extremist opposition abroad.

Chhum Socheat, spokesman for the Ministry of National Defense, stressed that today’s results show that the foreign extremist opposition organizations that have been trying to overthrow the democratic government of the Kingdom of Cambodia have failed again, and this is just a fantasy. It also proves that the Cambodian people and youth are not ignorant and do not participate in or support their actions.

The spokesperson said that although there have been no incidents attempted by extremist groups to incite, the Joint Forces of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces are ready to prevent and suppress any sabotage activities that are intended to incite riots, disturb the peace of the people and affect the peace, stability and development of the Kingdom of Cambodia.
Mr. Chhum Socheat wrote on his Facebook page: “We support the actions of the authorities and the Royal Government to arrest those who plan and incite any movement to overthrow the Royal Government, and ask the court to take strict legal measures, and call on all citizens and young people to remain calm and not be manipulated and defeated by the rebels until they participate in any activities that lead to self-imprisonment and lose their future with broken families.

At the same time, Mr. Chhum Socheat called on the people, especially the youth, to trust the Royal Government of Cambodia led by His Majesty King Hun Manet, who has been leading the Royal Government to maintain peace, stability, and build a better country to achieve the goal of becoming an upper-middle-income country by 2030 and a high-income country by 2050.
