The Public Service Commission (CSC) said during budget deliberations of the House Appropriations Committee on Tuesday, August 27, that there are 203,079 vacant positions in the government.
Carlo Nograles, president of the Canada Services Commission, said it takes a while for human resources departments in some government agencies to post job openings, and acknowledged that raises the need to work towards “professionalizing” and “improving maturity” of human resources offices.
Lulu Vispo, acting assistant director of the Department of Budget and Management, also noted that agencies face difficulties filling job vacancies due to high qualification requirements and low salaries.
The Central Statistics Office said it has submitted a proposal to the National Economic and Development Authority Board of Directors to fund a digital platform that will allow the commission and the DBM to instantly view job vacancies in different government agencies.
“It’s an ambitious project, but I think if it’s successful it will help us solve the problem of government job vacancies. The monitoring of agency vacancies will be real-time,” Nograles explained. “The current setup is that… we only get the number of job vacancies every six months.”
