“Heavy rain that began at 2am on Friday triggered landslides and damaged houses. Local residents were caught off guard,” local police chief Kundhe Na Nongkai told AFP.
Thailand has been hit by heavy monsoon rains this week, mainly affecting the country’s southern coastal areas and northern regions.
Rescue workers, military personnel and volunteers have been dispatched to the scene to deliver supplies to those in need and to assist with clean-up efforts.
The government said it had allocated more funds to help victims and set up a panel to study the cause of the landslide.
While Thailand experiences monsoon rains every year, man-made climate change has led to more severe weather patterns and more prone to destructive flooding.
In 2011, massive floods hit Thailand, killing more than 500 people and damaging millions of homes across the country.
