A prominent businessman and a respected police chief were shot dead in a bizarre series of events at the Halfway Tree police station in St Andrews on Monday.
Deon Singh, part owner of Singh’s Motors, reportedly disarmed a police officer and shot Detective Constable Kevin Mayne dead before turning the gun on himself while being shot by other officers, causing chaos at St. Andrew’s Central Precinct headquarters on Monday.

Singh and his wife Sofia Ramsanda Singh reportedly appeared in court on Monday to answer fraud-related charges.
The case was heard by Parish Judge Sanchia Burrell, and the defendant was represented by attorney CJ Mitchell.
The Gleaners It is understood that the plaintiff had paid the amount owed for the motor vehicle transaction before the court hearing, and when the case was brought up again on Monday, the trial was stayed to give police time to verify whether they had further interest in the defendant.
After spending some time in the court, the Singhs left at around 1 pm and headed to the Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) office
Mayne was reportedly an investigator in the case against the car dealership.
At around 5pm, Mayne was escorting Singh to the detention centre and noticed the businessman had a mobile phone in his possession. The officer tried to take the phone from Singh and a struggle ensued, with another officer coming to assist Mayne.
Singh reportedly pulled a pistol from the second policeman and shot Main several times before shooting himself, while Main’s colleagues shot the businessman.
Both men were taken to Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) where they were pronounced dead on arrival.
The Half-Way Tree CIB is investigating the matter.
Mayne is said to have worked as a campus police officer at the University of the West Indies in St Andrew during the time when Keith ‘Trinity’ Gardner was head of security.
“He worked for about two years. He was a very good police officer. They used to call him ‘Superman,'” a colleague of the now-deceased officer told The Gleaners.
The Independent Investigation Commission was notified of the incident and a team arrived at the scene just after 8pm last night to commence investigations.
Singh’s Motors has been the subject of several complaints in recent years, with unhappy customers expressing their concerns in articles published by Singh’s Motors. The Gleaners the problems they faced when trying to purchase a motor vehicle from the company.
Half-Way Tree CIB has confirmed the car dealership is being investigated over a number of allegations of fraud.
Several members of the police high command visited the crime scene yesterday.
This is the second time in two months that detainees have opened fire at a police station.
In May, a 35-year-old inmate reportedly snatched a police officer’s gun from under a cell table near the Montego Bay police station in Freeport and shot a fellow inmate.
He reportedly continued firing in the cellblock area and one bullet grazed a police officer.
An armed female police officer who was nearby reportedly went to help her distressed colleague but was “unable to react” due to shock.
Another officer reportedly drew his weapon and shot the prisoner with his gun, striking him in the upper torso and left foot.
The inmate then reportedly threw the gun to the ground, which was later recovered by other officers.
The injured police officer, the fugitive and the man he shot were taken to Cornwall Regional Hospital for treatment.
