In her third Olympic Games, Cassandra Bogland won gold in the women’s triathlon in her hometown. As far as results go, it doesn’t get much better than this. It’s awesome!
Bergland passed Switzerland’s Julie DeLong on the final lap to take the lead and pushed hard in the final 2000 meters. At the end of the race, she was stronger than her Swiss opponent, who performed heroically in defeat and was ecstatic to take the silver medal.
Britain’s Beth Porter took bronze. Unfortunately for another local hope, Emma Lombardi, she finished fourth among the top four runners and did not medal, 21 seconds behind her compatriot. She would have been exhausted after nearly two hours of racing.
For those who like the numbers, they completed the 10km run in 33 minutes. That’s a pretty impressive feat at the best of times, let alone after a 1500m swim and 40km bike ride. By comparison, the world record for the women’s 10,000m is 28 minutes 54.14 seconds.
