Colima (apro) – This Monday morning, Martha Laura Verdía Martínez, daughter of Cemeí Verdía Zepeda, leader of the Michoacán Coast Self-Defense Group, was shot dead in this city.
According to initial reports, the 19-year-old girl was driving a Tacoma truck with tinted windows to her workplace, a clinical analytical laboratory where she worked as an assistant, when the attack occurred.
The incident occurred at the intersection of Xalapa Street and Mexico Avenue near Los Angeles when two motorcyclists fired multiple shots at the vehicle the victim was riding in.
Unofficial versions show that the truck’s driver’s side, windows and windshield were hit by more than 20 bullets.
The attackers fled, and hours later, authorities provided no official information about the incident or reported arrests of any possible perpetrators.
Cemeí Verdía, originally from the indigenous community of Santa María Ostura in the municipality of Águila, Michoacán, was appointed coordinator of the coastal community police of that entity and at the beginning of the last decade he led self-defense groups against communities that had been subject to organized crime groups in the area.
In 2015, Verdía Zepeda was arrested by Navy agents for violating federal weapons laws during a federal government operation to disarm self-defense groups in the region, but he was released during several operations. A few months later.
Verdía Zepeda has suffered several attacks in recent years that nearly claimed his life, most recently in 2019 while in a papaya orchard he owned.
In 2018, he was nominated by the Civic Movement party as a candidate for regional representative based in the city of Colcomán, and after losing the election, he moved to Colima with his family.
