August 17, 2024 (El Fasher) – A spokesman for the Darfur Joint Forces on Thursday accused the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of detaining about 13 civilians in the eastern and western areas of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, based on their ethnicity.
Since 10 May, the Joint Forces, in cooperation with the Sudanese Army and the Popular Resistance Movement, have been engaged in heavy fighting with the Rapid Security Forces in El Fasher.
The ongoing conflict in the city has displaced more than half a million people, with many seeking refuge in the Jebel Marra mountain area controlled by the Sudan Liberation Movement.
Ahmed Hussein Mustafa, a spokesman for the joint forces, told Sudan Tribune that the Rapid Security Forces kidnapped civilians and demanded ransom from their families, threatening them with death or forced conscription if the ransom was not paid.
He said the kidnappings targeted people from Moro villages, Abu Zureja and Zam Zam camp for displaced persons based on tribal and regional affiliations. He further condemned the actions, calling them another serious violation by the rapid security forces against unarmed civilians.
The kidnapped persons have been transported to the Adula Mountains in East Darfur.
In April, the Rapid Security Forces and allied Arab militias attacked approximately 15 villages west of El Fasher, which are mainly inhabited by the Zaghawa ethnic group.
The attacks have resulted in massive human rights violations, including killings, looting and enforced disappearances, and have forced many residents to flee their homes.
