September 1, 2024 (ZALINGEI) – Sudanese army airstrikes on Zalingei city in Central Darfur killed at least four people and injured dozens, the displaced persons group said on Sunday.
The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group has controlled Zalingei, the capital of Central Darfur state, since late last year. Government forces have recently stepped up air strikes on the area and are battling the Rapid Support Forces for control.
Airstrikes late Saturday hit a camp for displaced people and a residential area in Zalingei, killing four people and wounding an unknown number of others, said Adam Rijjar, spokesman for the Coordination Organization for Displaced Persons and Refugees in Darfur.
The military could not immediately be reached for comment.
Since fighting broke out between the RSF and Sudanese government forces in April, the Rapid Security Forces have taken control of most major cities in Darfur, while Sudanese government forces control most towns and villages in the region.
Last week the United Nations said two airstrikes in the region killed at least 24 civilians.
