On Sunday, a grand competition in memory of Dan Theis, who died on December 29, 2022 at the age of 55, took place at the Escher Border.
He is the symbol of the Junior Escher team, but he is loved not only there, but also in the entire Luxembourg football community. During the big games, the stands at the border stadium are also full.
There were many old acquaintances on the pitch, such as Denis Scuto, Dan da Motta, Patrick Morocuti, Kim Kinziger, Manu Score, Theo Scholten, Philipp Feltgen and many other past glories of Luxembourgish football. The players all wore Dan Theis’ beloved number 11 on their jerseys.
Coached by successful youth coaches Alex Pecqueur and Jhemp Barboni. The match was officiated by former chief referee Alain Hamer.
Dan Theis, affectionately known as “Den Décken”, has taken this path with 100% commitment as a player and coach, but not only at Escher Jeunesse. As a player, he won seven championships with the black and white team and lifted the trophy three times.
Dan Theis is the leading goal scorer in Jeunesse’s history. Another youth legend, and indeed the man with the most appearances for the youth team, Dennis Scuto, spoke about his black and white colleagues.
“Dan is a young guy and I think he lives for the young guys and he always gives everything and um it means a lot to me because we have, I’m probably one of the guys that has played with him the longest, pretty much his entire career and what he did at Jeunesse and we played together and he really is a guy that always pulls the team along and is a true role model and that’s why I’m so happy to have this event here and it’s important to remember guys like him.”
Dan Theis, who made 35 appearances for the Red Lions, long regretted missing a penalty against England in a 1998 European Championship qualifier.
Dan Theis is also the coach of the Jeunesse team. In addition, he has served as the U19 coach of FLF.
As a player, coach, and even media reporter, he played from lungs to tongue, but he played the ball, not the person.
Dan Theis died on December 29, 2022, after a month in the hospital following a massive heart attack while cycling. He is missed by his former teammate, coach and Jeunesse President Jhemp Barboni.
“I think Dan lived for football and his family. We will miss him for sure. It would have been great if he was a first-team coach, if he could have had the opportunity to be a coach again but unfortunately it didn’t happen, but he will always be one of us and his presence will always be on the pitch.”
The two mixed teams faced off in a grand match witnessed by Sports Minister George Michaud. During the half-time of the match, a cheque was handed over to the Cribb Crank Canna Foundation in the presence of Dan Theis’ wife.
