Dame Janice Pereira, former Chief Justice of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (ECSC), has been appointed as a Judge of the Privy Council.

The appointment, approved by King Charles III, was a recognition of her service and marked another historic milestone in her career.

In an announcement on Wednesday, the king also approved the appointments of Baroness Ellunide Morgan, First Minister of Wales, and John Sweeney, First Minister of Scotland, as members of the Privy Council.

Dame Pereira, who hails from the British Overseas Territory of Virgin Gorda, has long been a trailblazer in the legal field.

She made history as the first female chief justice of the European Coal and Steel CommunityShe has held this position since 2012. During her tenure, she has played a major role in modernizing the justice system, in particular through the implementation of the Digital Justice Platform. These innovations have ensured the continued accessibility and efficiency of the justice system, even in the face of challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Privy Council is one of the oldest judicial institutions in the United Kingdom and is the final court of appeal for many Commonwealth countries, including those in the Eastern Caribbean.

As a Member of the Privy Council, Dame Janice will provide legal advice to the Sovereign and be involved in decision-making on important Commonwealth affairs.

Dame Janice has received numerous honours throughout her career. She was awarded the Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) by Queen Elizabeth II for services to the judiciary. She was also awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of the West Indies.
