Dame Graca Machel to visit Barbados this week

GermanyAfrican stateswoman, educator, humanitarian and widow of former South African President Nelson Mandela, Graca Machel, will visit Barbados from Wednesday, August 21 to Sunday, August 26.

Mrs. Machel’s visit coincides with the liberation season and she will attend a series of related events.
Ms. Graça will visit the Barbados Museum and Historical Society and attend a Barbados/Africa networking event to meet with South Africans living here. She will also meet with Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley and other government officials during her six-day visit.

Mrs. Machel will visit places of interest related to Bridgetown’s intangible cultural heritage, such as historic Bridgetown and its garrison, the Liberator Statue, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Liberty Village and Golden Square. She will also share the story of sugar and rum with Mrs. Machel.

The highlight of the visit will be the discussion “In the Words of Mrs. Graça Machel: Reflections on the Path to Freedom” at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, August 24, in the Frank Collymore Hall. This day is the United Nations International Day of Remembrance of the Slavery Trade and its Abolition. The event starts at 6:30 p.m.

Mrs. Graca Machel, who was the first lady of Mozambique and whose husband is Samora Machel, was the Minister of Education of Mozambique and has devoted her life to promoting women’s rights and improving children’s lives.
In 2018, she was awarded the World Health Organization (WHO) Gold Medal, the highest honor, for her outstanding contributions to the health and well-being of women, children and adolescents. (JC/BGIS)
