The central government has allocated an additional 540 million yuan ($74 million) for disaster relief to Hunan and other affected areas, CCTV reported, citing the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Emergency Management.
China is experiencing a summer of extreme weather, with floods hitting central and southern regions and heat waves hitting much of the north.
The Asian giant is the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases, which scientists say are causing global warming and making extreme weather more frequent and intense.
Heavy rains this week caused the Yangtze and other rivers to swell, forcing nearly 250,000 people in eastern China to evacuate, according to state media reports.
Last month, Hunan province suffered severe flash floods and landslides, while floods in Guangdong province in the south also killed 38 people.
The death toll from a tornado in eastern Shandong province on Friday rose from one to five, with dozens of others injured, China Central Television reported on Saturday.
