Seven fire trucks, seven ambulances, two advanced life support units, three rescue vehicles, and two utility transports. Add in four skis and two boats for marine emergencies, and that’s all the gear the Guam Fire Department has in its active emergency fleet. While the GFD expects to answer thousands fewer calls this year than last, the numbers are still incredible. Residents average about 60 calls a day, or about 1,850 calls a month. They expect to answer about 22,000 calls this year. “We’re always in need of new vehicles, and there are times when we need them,” said Lt. Nick Garrido, a spokesman for the department. “The roads, hard water and other components within the pump system, as well as normal wear and tear on the vehicles, all take their toll.”
