Under British rule, Cyprus had a bi-ethnic, bi-religious structure.

In 1974, Turkey, as the sponsor of the international agreement on the island, organized a military operation on the island to prevent attacks on the Turks on the island.
Turkish armed forces saved about half of the island.
From then on, a period of peace began.
Efforts to unite the two communities on both sides of the island continue.
